PORTFOLIO

These are what I consider to be my best pieces of work. It is a mix of personal projects and college assignments.

ANIMATION PROJECT

One of the biggest and most interesting solo projects I have taken on is an animation project from my first year at college. For this we could choose what we wanted to do. Personally, I decided to do a scene with 2 characters arguing. I found an audio clip from Stranger Things where a man and a girl were arguing with each other, found some models that fit the scene and built a dynamic lip-sync around this.
It's one of my proudest achievements because I had never animated before coming on the course or used Maya, and to produce something that shows emotion and is dynamic and accurate is impressive.
There were things that could be improved - camera movement was a bit clunky, textures weren't seamless, some movements caused stretching models - but overall it is a clean animation.
(Below are the renders from the 2 cameras in the scene)

VFX WORK

Over the course of my time at college, we haven't done a great deal of visual effects work but we did create a short clip that required us to use a green-screen and then edit the videos in After Effects.
We decided to show a short story where small people on a table top were being watched and chased. It wasn't overly complicated but it allowed me to learn the workings of the software.
We took a scene each in the group and I believe my scene came out as one of the cleanest. There were some issues with shadows not being in the correct place but other than that, most problems were worked around.
I learned a good range of compositing skills from doing this. For example, using masks to hide parts of the clip that are behind other objects as well as feathering and colour masking to make the scene additions seamless.
A big issue that did arise during this project was organisation and communication between teams. We split up into 2 teams for this work and while one team was working on recording the background, the team recording the green-screen changed the sequence without communicating this. This set us back a lot and consequently meant we had to re-film scenes. When this happened, I moved between the groups and found a way to organise us in a more cohesive way, meaning we were able to complete the project with much fewer problems.

CONCEPT ART

Art one of my biggest passions when it comes to creative studies. I draw on a very regular basis. Since starting this course I've put extra emphasis on learning how to draw concept art in particular.
A prime example of this at work is my concept art for the alien character in the game we are making in our synoptic project. I started by drawing out a mix of ideas, as did everyone else in the team. We then did a second wave of designs influenced by our favourite ideas from the first wave. After that we narrowed it down to 2 designs (one of mine and one of another member's) and I was tasked with drawing up the final, digital concept art which I did using Sketchbook.
Along side this concept art I did an environmental design for this project - a futuristic greenhouse in space.
I also did a similar project last year during the Yooka-Laylee industry brief where I designed a character concept in which 2 characters melded into one and an environment concept for the characters to exist in. These were not as clear or refined but gave me a chance to really show off my creativity and gave me an interesting challenge which I rose to.
Furthermore, I have done some photo-bashing concept art. This was a practice for the 'imagined worlds' section of our coursework. I did some digital drawing over the top to bring all the separate pieces together and finish off the piece.
